Ian Darling, former Ombudsman at Tarion accepts role as Chair of the newly created Condominium Authority Tribunal (CAT). The tribunal is being established as an online dispute resolution forum for condo disputes that is being set up to be a cost-effective way of resolving disputes in Condos.  Jill Moriarty will take on the role of Ombudsman at Tarion.

The CAO Board of Directors appoints Chair of the Condominium Authority Tribunal

The Board of Directors for the newly established Condominium Authority of Ontario (CAO) has appointed the first Chair of the Condominium Authority Tribunal (CAT).

Ian Darling will begin his role as Chair of the CAT effective October 2, 2017. In this capacity, Mr. Darling will recruit and lead a team of mediators and adjudicators who will oversee Ontario’s first online dispute resolution system. The Chair will be instrumental in fostering a consumer-focused culture that aims to resolve disputes in a respectful, timely and cost-effective manner.

“Ian brings a wealth of experience and familiarity with dispute resolution,” says Tom Wright, Board Chair of the CAO. “We were impressed with Ian’s emphasis on fairness, his experience in consumer protection, and his customer based approach. We are confident that he is well positioned to lead this new tribunal that will support and strengthen condo communities.”

“I’m looking forward to joining the CAT as the new Chair,” says Ian Darling. “As more and more people choose to live in condominiums, the CAT will be a valued and welcomed service for condominium owners.”

Mr. Darling brings a strong background in dispute resolution to this role. A former Ombudsman for Tarion and Fanshawe College, Mr. Darling received the Special Contribution Award from the Association of Canadian Colleges and Universities in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Academic Ombudsmanship. He served on the Board of Directors for the Forum of Canadian Ombudsmans from 2003 – 2013.

Mr. Darling has an Honours Bachelor Degree in History from McMaster University, with a minor in International Justice and Human Rights. He also holds a Master of Arts in Conflict Resolution from Antioch University.
