The Manitoba Legislative Assembly is accepting applications for the position of Ombudsman for the Province of Manitoba.

The Ombudsman is an independent, non-partisan officer of the legislature who promotes fairness and administrative accountability through investigation of complaints about matters of administration under The Ombudsman Act and disclosures of wrongdoing under The Public Interest Disclosure (Whistleblower Protection) Act. Under The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) and The Personal Health Information Act (PHIA), the Ombudsman upholds access to information and privacy rights by investigating complaints and reviewing compliance.

As Ombudsman, you will provide executive leadership and strategic direction to a team of professional staff. You will have a proven record of strong management skills in a complex environment.  You will be capable of making difficult decisions that reflect honesty, fairness and courage.  You will have highly developed oral and written communication skills in order to communicate effectively and build relationships with individuals at all levels of government, as well as with people from diverse cultures and life experiences.

You will have experience dealing with provincial or municipal governments and government agencies. You will have experience in the interpretation and application of law and the application of the principles of natural justice and fairness in reaching decisions.  You will also have knowledge and understanding of the principles of access to information and the rights regarding the protection of privacy.  You must have the ability to direct investigations and reviews and make common sense, reasonable recommendations.

This appointment is for a six-year term and, upon review, may be renewed for a further six years.

The successful candidate must be a Canadian citizen; must be willing and able to travel and must provide satisfactory Criminal Record, Child Abuse and Adult Abuse Registry checks.
