Confused about information circulated about International Ombudsman Association (IOA) certification?
The IOA has recently circulated information stating that their Organizational Ombudsman Practitioner Examinations, originally planned for 3 or 4 sites in the USA, will now be offered at 240 test sites, including 7 Canadian provinces and 17 other countries. This information has generated queries to FCO about what this means for Canadian Ombudsman practitioners.
As FCO members know, one of FCO’s objectives is to “develop and promote professional standards of conduct and a code of ethics for Ombudsman offices in Canada”. FCO is approaching the work on professional standards from a Canadian perspective and has done some preliminary work; however, it is an area that requires extensive discussion and consultation with you, our FCO members.
We would like to clarify that FCO has not been involved in the IOA certification process. Similarly, the fact that examinations are being conducted in Canada is solely an IOA initiative and is not an activity that FCO, as an organization, is involved with in any way.
